His was one of the premier books of the twentieth century: Truth and Method went through several editions, each a bit closer to Gadamer's vision of philosophical hermeneutics, exploring the nature of knowledge. Gadamer rejected traditional quasi-scientific approaches to establishing cultural meaning. He argued instead that truth and method acted in opposition to each other, and examined the ways in which historical and cultural circumstances influenced human understanding. In this new translation of Gadamer's essential work, we find the author expressing the question of truth as it emerges in the experience of art, the ontology of the work of art and its hermeneutic significance, the existence of the question of truth to understanding in the human sciences, and the ontological shift of hermeneutics guided by language. This is an essential part of the current theories of social science. Bloomsbury Academic is an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
