The editor--who had a personal relationship with Gandhi, recounted in his introduction--selected the writings of the Indian independence activist and philosopher of nonviolence based on the tri-fold criteria of permanent relevance, illustration of the development of Gandhi's philosophy of Satyagraha and its relation to the Bhagavad Gita, and emphasis of ideas "that should be of considerable relevance to contemporary thought." Included among the writings are correspondence with poet Rabindranath Tagore, discussions of the Indian caste system, extracts from his late diary entries, and correspondence with the Viceroy of India.
