Garman (history, Easter New Mexico University) has made a study of one of the more obscure forms of the concept of the Mother Goddess--the cult of the matronae in prehistoric Rhineland. Combining the skimpy historical data with an evaluation of archaeological finds, he puts forth a hypothesis as to the origins and nature of the goddesses. Garman notes the relationship of the threefold nature of the goddesses to Celtic manifestations. He also speculates as to the transformation of the cult within the context of early Christianity. A list of dedicatory inscriptions by site is of help to those wishing to follow up on his research. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
