Title IX of the US Educational Amendments Act (1972) spurred a surge in female participation in inter-scholastic/collegiate sports. While this trend is laudable given the evidence of the benefits of exercise (and social justice), injuries inevitably come with the turf. Focusing on preventing activity-related injuries, this workshop was organized by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in conjunction with two national research institutes. Garrett (orthopaedic surgery, U. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) introduces current trends and perspectives in this field. The 32 contributions address the epidemiology, and types, of such injuries; sport-specific injuries; musculoskeletal fitness; and general and psychosocial health issues. Lastly, suggested directions for future research are enumerated (e.g. exploring exercise's influence on depression in the aging woman). Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
