The editors (three psychology scholars with the College of St. Catherine in Minnesota, the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology, and the American Psychological Association) present biographies of 18 women of achievement who lived in the 20th and late 19th centuries, paying particular attention to how their backgrounds, contexts, and external influences informed their later activities. Among the women featured are Isadora Duncan, Alice Paul, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rachel Carson, Evelyn Gentry Hooker (the "psychologist who normalized homosexuality"), Lucille Ball, Ella Fitzgerald, and Rosalind Franklin. A final chapter takes a collective look at the biographies, pointing out common threads in the influences and obstacles in the lives of the women. Students of psychology, women's studies, and leadership may be interested in this book. Study questions are provided in the appendix. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
