Otto (International Human Rights Law Programme, Melbourne Law School, U. of Melbourne, Australia) provides an introductory essay in which she explains her use of the word gender in the title although the topics under consideration primarily concern women's rights. She also describes her choice of organization according to nine broad themes--her aim being to convey a sense of cross-fertilization of ideas and activities rather than a chronology. Three volumes present a total of 64 previously published articles and book excerpts--printed in facsimile, yet legible, but lacking an index. Except for a section devoted to early voices, she has selected writings published since 1990. The broad themes include histories of struggles; early normative and institutional developments; structural critiques of international human rights law; building multicultural and intersectional feminisms; reconceptualizing mainstream human rights; recognizing new human rights; pursuing implementation; women, human rights, and development; the question of men and other gender identities. Sources include Human Rights Quarterly, Review of International Studies, International Feminist Journal of Politics, and Feminist Legal Studies, among others.
