Much of the writing about Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Chippewa) botanical knowledge by non-Anishnaabe authors comes in the form of "colonized texts," according to Geniusz (American Indian studies, U. of Wisconsin at Eau Claire), in that they serve the interests of the colonizers and the process of systemic racism and oppression or they present information according to the philosophies, cosmologies, and knowledge-keeping systems of the colonizers. However, they may contain information that could be useful for programs revitalizing Anishinaabe culture, provided they can be decolonized by removing degrading comments and bringing the information back into the context of the Anishinaabe worldview. Geniusz, an Anishinaabe herself, discusses how to decolonize anthropological and other writings about Anishinaabe botanical knowledge, theoretically guided by an approach similar to that developed by the Maori people, Kaupapa Maori Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
