This ethnographic study by Gentry (an Atlanta-based behavior scientist and clinical research currently with Message of Empowerment Productions, LLC--"a minority and woman-owned firm specializing in program evaluation and behavior interventions for high risk populations") reports on findings from The Health Intervention Project in Atlanta in order to provide an understanding of how poor African-American women who smoke crack cocaine reduce their risk for HIV infection. Theoretically, the study deploys black feminist, symbolic interactionist, and social constructionist perspectives as means of examining the relationship between the subjects of the study and the social structure within which they experience the objective and subjective realities of high-risk environments and HIV prevention programs.
