The definition of empire has varied over the centuries, the most recent archetype being the far-flung colonial empires established by the Western European powers. Gerasimov, the editor of Ab Imperio, Kusber (east European history, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz) and Semyonov (history, Smolny College, St. Petersburg State University, Russia) present a collection that addresses the empire of Russia, a contiguous state that stretched across two continents. Three essays look at specific elements of this empire; the development under Catherine the Great, the troubling case of Poland, and the conquest and settlement of Siberia, which has echoes of the European conquest of America. Others debate the interpretation of empire as it pertained to Russia and in the light of recent historical theories of empire. The inclusion of Russia in the discussion of empire adds much to the understanding of the many variations of this phenomenon. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
