Gilbert (international law, U. of Essex, UK) looks at how the international community has sought to respond to crimes that have an international or transnational aspect. He begins by identifying and analyzing the primary sources of extradition law. Next, he discusses human rights conventions used by fugitive offenders when challenging extraditions and addresses the controversy surrounding the political offense exemption. Chapters in the final section consider the lawfulness and effectiveness of certain alternatives to extradition. This is a revised and updated version of a volume published in 1998 under the title Transnational Fugitive Offenders in International Law.
