Glotfelty (U. of Nevada, Reno) found inspiration for this book from a course she revived in the 1990s titled "Literature of the Far West and Nevada." In the hopes of making the writing of Nevada more widely known and available, this anthology has been pieced together from the heritage of writers from and about the state. Thirteen thematic sections include Native American stories and myths, journals of exploration, emigrant encounters and Indian responses, the mining frontier, rural life, cowboy poetry, writings on Reno and Las Vegas, nuclear Nevada, and contemporary travel writing, poetry, and fiction. A few of the more well-known authors include John D. Frémont, Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr., Arthur Miller, Mario Puzo, Hunter S. Thompson, John Muir, and Tom Robbins.
