Gaddio discovered the two sites under the water off the west delta of the Nile in 1996, and here offers an initial report on the ten years of excavation that followed. He lists the most important objects found and some of the first scientific conclusions and hypotheses that may be drawn, but warns that exhaustive and detailed studies of the material will take many years and many volumes of the new series. The Centre for Maritime Archaeology was founded in 2003 by the University of Oxford and the Hilti Foundation, which had been supporting Goddio's work in Egypt since 1996.
