Father Godfrey (University Ministry, U. of San Francisco) examines the unusual partnership of a Catholic parish with the gay rights cause at San Francisco's Most Holy Redeemer Parish, built in what is now the Castro district in 1902. The transformation of the parish from a hostile opponent to what Godfrey calls "the world's first gay neighborhood" to its sexuality- and gender-inclusive present began in the early 1980s with the emergence of AIDS. Community work on the disease has become an institution of Holy Redeemer, and in 1999 Father Zachary Shore represented his parishioners when he publicly lambasted the donation by California's twelve dioceses of $310,000 to an initiative banning same-sex marriage.
