In Israelite wisdom literature, 'election' refers to the election of Israel by YHWH (God) as the people chosen among the nations to receive special wisdom. Goering (religious studies, U. of Virginia) explores this theme in reading the interplay in Ben Sira's text (Shirach, second century BCE) between universal wisdom and Israel's particular Torah traditions. Rather than interpretations of general vs. special revelation that equate them, he offers one that takes into account piety as a necessary factor and anticipated future universal worship of Israel's God. Appended are the author's critical reconstructions and translations of four passages from Shirach relevant to the arguments presented here: the opening poem on creation, a poem on election, prayer for deliverance, and hymn on creation.
