Monk has already ruined trips to Hawaii and Germany for his long-suffering assistant, Natalie. The least he can do to make it up to her is accompany her on a journey to France and try not to ruin that too. He reluctantly agrees to go along and then stuns Natalie by announcing that he wants to visit - of all things - the sewers of Paris. Not his usual cup of (milk-free) tea. But the historic underground maze of pipes and tunnels is famous for making the City of Light admirably sanitary, and to Monk, that's worth paying tribute. And he can always wear a haz-mat suit for the tour.
The only problem is that Natalie and Monk's explorations lead them to another hidden world below the Parisian streets: the catacombs, filled with ageless skulls and bones. And Monk's sharp eye catches sight of one skull that's not so old - and that shows evidence of murder. Now Monk and Natalie are pulled into a case more roundabout and with more dead ends than the sewer system itself.
When a San Francisco connection is discovered, Captain Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Disher fly in to help. And the clues will lead them to some unusual suspects including those among a subculture of people taking a political stand by living only on what they find by digging through the (shudder) garbage. Solving this murder case will make Monk miserable.
