Originally published in 1964; this is a reprint of a work intended by Goldberger (emeritus, physics, U. of California at San Diego) and Watson (emeritus, Marine Physical Laboratory, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, U. of California at San Diego) as a graduate-level introduction to the basic principles of particle collision theory, along with physical examples. In 11 chapters they cover symmetry operations on the Schrödinger equation, description of scattering processes, formal scattering theory, the two-body problem with central forces, scattering by noncentral forces, lifetime and decay of virtual states, dispersion theory, and scattering by systems of bound particles. The authors preferred mathematical reasonableness and physical rigor to a strict mathematical rigor. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
