Goldín (anthropology, Florida International U.) describes how rural people in Guatemala experience economic and cultural changes as their country becomes part of the global market. Based on interviews and surveys she conducted between 1990 and 2005, the volume focuses on people's statements about work and sustenance, as well as stories told in traditional narratives. She presents four case studies--cottage industries devoted to garment production, vegetable growing for internal and border markets reached through direct commerce, crops grown for export, and wage labor in garment assembly factories--in Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán, Chimaltenango, and Sacatepéquez, and compares class, ethnic, generational, and gender differences among workers, as well as work styles, diversification, and control as a function of production systems; ideas about paths to wealth, accumulation, competition, and cooperation; and specific economic activities.
