Despite the monumental linguistic research that has been conducted on Ancient Greek, says Goldstein, the factors that determine the sequence of words in the Greek sentence remain by and large a mystery. He argues here that Greek word order, far from being random or unanalyzable, is extraordinarily sensitive to distinctions in meaning, and it is that sensitivity that lies behind the notorious word order variation of the language. His starting point is Wackernagel's Law generalizing word order in the archaic Indo-European languages that enclitics and postpositives occur "second" in their clause, and uses Herodotus' Histories, a fifth-century BCE text in the Ionic dialect, as his test case.
