Conceptually borrowing from Marxism and critical theory, Goldstein (sociology, U. of Central Florida) and associates aim to establish a critical theory of religion that can serve as an alternative to sociology's rational choice theory. The first seven essays focus on theory building and discuss Marx's views on religion, dialectical relations between religion and secularism, intersubjectivity and religious language, and contributions of the Frankfurt School to religious studies. The five remaining contributions demonstrate the application of theory through analysis of the rise of Christianity, the decline of the Islamic Caliphate, and the practice of speaking in tongues, among other topics.
