Goodson (chemistry and biochemistry, U. of Massachusetts-Dartmouth) presents an intermediate, post-calculus textbook on mathematical and statistical methods used by chemists. He developed it from a course he teaches to third-year undergraduate chemistry majors and, with additional assignments, graduate chemistry students. He expects readers to have completed one year of physics and at least one year each of chemistry and calculus at the university level. Mathematics courses beyond calculus are no longer a standard part of the chemistry curriculum, he says, so his course is designed to bridge the gap from calculus to the level of mathematics needed to understand the professional literature in physical and analytical chemistry. He covers calculus, statistics, differential equations, and linear algebra. Answers are provided to selected exercises. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
