This substantial volume presents the results of excavations carried out in advance of recent development at Covent Garden in London, which was a site of trading and manufacture active in the Middle Saxon period, from the 7th century until the Viking invasions of the 9th century. Introductory chapters describe the history of the area and the method, circumstances, sites, and organization of the excavation. The results of the excavation that follow are presented chronologically from 600 to the present and thematically with summaries of aspects that include the relation of London to Roman occupation, discussion of the buildings, daily life, craft and industry, agricultural economy, trade, and development.
