This text for undergraduates combines instruction in rhetoric with a sequence of assignments to guide students in academic research writing. Of special interest are boxes of student voices throughout the text. The text begins by explaining skills needed for reading, responding to, and citing scholarly prose, and covers research technologies. Each chapter includes readings and brief writing assignments. In the next section, a sequence of five assignments culminates in a formal research argument. This section provides examples of student, professional, and academic writing, including complete student essays. Part III, a research dossier, contains six readings on the topic of surveillance, plus a selection of professional and academic research articles showing the different ways a question or issue can be examined through different disciplinary perspectives. Introducing each reading are reflections by their authors on their own inquiry and research processes. Student questions follow each reading, asking students to reflect on the writers' arguments and rhetorical strategies. Part IV gives guidelines for designing, organizing, editing, and formatting the research writing project. B&w photos are included. An instructor's manual and other resources are available online. Goshert is affiliated with Utah Valley University. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
