This thorough and detailed reference for artists and conservators was originally published in 1993; and it was definitely due for an update to incorporate information about the numerous products that have been introduced as well as new ideas about products and procedures arising from new scientific knowledge, the author's own experiments and experiences with lightfastness and other characteristics, and increased interest in craft and conservation issues. Coverage begins with chapters on the basics: tools and equipment for the artist, supports, grounds, binders, solvents and thinners, varnishes, driers, preservatives, and retarders, and pigments. The next section covers paint making and painting methods: oil and water-thinned paints, temperas, encaustic, pastel, synthetic binders, and mural paints and techniques. The final chapters address picture protection and conservation and restoration. A glossary, list of suppliers, and a bibliography round out the book. Much information is presented in tables, and line drawings support the text where appropriate. Health and safety issues are given their due.
