During seven summer visits to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana between 1903 and 1912, McClintock (1870-1949) took more than 2,000 photographs, most during Sun Dance encampments. Some appeared in his The Old North Trail (1910) and Old Indian Trails (1923), others were colorized and used as slides to accompany his lectures, and many were never published. This handsome volume presents over 100 plates, most from the Walter McClintock Papers, Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, Yale University. Grafe, curator of American Indian Art at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and other scholars describe the relationship between the photographer and the tribe, provide biographical and historical information, and discuss technique and context. He also adds informative notes to McClintock's own colorful and rather romanticized captions. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
