This work reports on the findings of the Institute of Medicine-National Research Council Committee on Sports-Related Concussion in Youth. One early chapter overviews the neuroscience, biomechanics, and risks of concussions in the developing brain. Later chapters describe the recognition, diagnosis, and acute management of concussions and explore issues related to treatment and management of prolonged symptoms (post-concussion syndrome) and the consequences of multiple concussions. Protection and prevention strategies are described, such as protective equipment and changes in sports rules, concussion education, and state legislation. The final chapter offers recommendations on rules and playing standards, diagnosis and management, and protective equipment. An appendix offers clinical evaluation tools.
