They were a bit unusual, but not entirely unique. From 1900 to 1940 about 14 percent of all American doctorates in mathematics were awarded to women, a number not equaled again until the 1980s. Here Green (mathematics emerita, Marymount U,) and Duke (mathematics, DePaul U.) report on their study of all 228 of the American women who earned doctorates in mathematics before 1940 and their reconstruction of the milieu in which they worked. They compiled biographical and bibliographical information on each of the women and their scientific and cultural communities, the nature of their primary studies, their family backgrounds, their education and professional activities, and have found that more women were involved in mathematics as a profession and vocation than previously thought. The authors also provide a fascinating introductory essay and a website featuring their data. Co-published with the London Mathematical Society.
