This visually oriented, color-illustrated text offers background in neuroanatomy that will help mental health clinicians, psychologists, therapists, psychopharmacologists, and psychiatric residents stay abreast of the literature on the brain basics behind behavioral disorders. Focus is on parts of the brain specifically related to behavior in anxiety disorders, PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, addiction, and mood disorders. The book begins by reviewing the gross and microscopic anatomical aspects of the information-processing machinery of the brain, and reviewing the neural circuits involved in behavioral state control (the anatomy of the major neurotransmitter system). It then examines the anatomy of the thalamus and its role as a processor of signals. Later chapters are devoted to each behavioral disorder. The book concludes with a brief neuroanatomical tour through the human nervous system. Each chapter is written to stand alone. The art program offers about 200 high-quality color illustrations, brain scans, and process diagrams depicting nuances of brain-behavior anatomy and function. Chapter summaries and case vignettes are also included. The text can be used as a point of departure for learning about the mind-brain basis of the major behavioral disorders. Green and Ostrander teach psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
