A photographic survey of great early mailboxes highlightingthose of the grand Art Deco period, together witha brief history of the mailbox-and-chute system patentedby James Cutler of Rochester, New York, in 1883, this bookdocuments its spread to commercial and residential buildingsin New York City and beyond in the late nineteenth and earlytwentieth centuries. Mailboxes and chutes were consideredas essential to the operation of any major hotel, office, civicor residential building as the front door. They found a newrole as decorative elements, available in a range of styles andmaterials. Mailboxes were focal points in lobbies and publicspaces throughout the country: Grand Central Terminal, the Woolworth Building, the St. Regis Hotel, York & Sawyer’sLincoln Building, and many more. While some have beenremoved, forgotten, disused, or painted over, others are stillin use, are polished daily, and hold pride of place in lobbiesthroughout the country.
