Greene (medieval literature and rhetoric, Eastern Washington U.) sifts out commonalities in the rhetorical strategies of five women from different historical periods to identify a discourse characteristic of women's rhetoric. These strategies derive from and make productive use of women's historical position at the margins of institutionalized power in Western culture, she says, and calls this discourse in women's rhetoric the discourse of hysteria. She argues that women have transformed hysterical symptoms into rhetorical strategy, deriving from the identification with weakness a topos of humility, from the hysteric's flight from the body a topos of physicality, and from the protest against exclusion a topos of authority.
