This two-volume encyclopedia contains some 400 alphabetical entries defining and explaining issues and topics related to career development, broadly defined by editors Greenhaus (Drexel U.) and Callanan (West Chester U.) to include psychological, sociological, educational, counseling, organizational behavior, and human resource management perspectives. They identify the major themes included as theoretical perspectives on careers, social contexts of careers, career evolution, decision-making in careers, variations in career patterns and career success, career development initiatives, legislative and regulatory mandates, assessment areas and techniques, job search and organizational recruiting, and professional associations. The entries are cross-referenced and include guides to further reading. Where entries are geographically specific, such as with professional associations or legislative and regulatory matters, they generally only discuss the United States. A few examples will give a sense of the variety of individual topics covered: social constructionism, ethics and careers, spirituality and careers, affirmative action, nepotism, low-income workers and careers, burnout, two-career relationships, lifelong learning, occupational prestige, human capital, organizational citizenship behavior, career intervention outcomes, executive coaching, training and development, occupational classification systems, integrity testing, and unbiased hiring systems.
