This volume explores the portrayal of serial and mass killer identity and its related ideology in contemporary crime narratives on both sides of the Atlantic, examining detective fiction, the true crime genre, and media journalism. Methodologically, Gregoriou (English stylistics, U. of Leeds) focuses on stylistic linguistic choices of grammar, metaphorical patterns, and lexical choices in which narrative viewpoint deviates from a commonsense version of reality, or serial killer "mind style." She also addresses victim ordering and typology in the serial killer narratives. Her subject matter includes online articles from British daily newspapers about British serial killers, online articles from US daily news papers about the Virginia Tech massacre of 2007, true crime narratives by British writers Nigel Cawthorne and Christopher Berry-Dee, Jeff Lindsay's Dexter novels and their television adaptation, and Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's Jack the Ripper comic From Hell and its film adaptation.
