The emerging use of monoclonal antibodies (m-abs) in the treatment of serious illnesses has provoked debate and immense hope. In this series of papers, researchers give results of their work with these and the possibilities of their use in treating such diseases as, psoriasis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. Grewel now vice president of a biotechnical research company, begins with the background of the discoveries that led to the medical application of monoclonal antibodies. All the contributors note that while some m-abs have already been approved for use research needs to be exhaustive particularly because of the tendency to immunogenicity. This is the immune reaction of the body to the antibodies intended to heal. In some cases this has resulted in anaphylactic shock. Many of the articles mention possible solutions to this. The possibilities for this form of treatment are immense. When perfected, m-abs may provide cures to a host of conditions with fewer side effects that present treatments.
