This book addresses the proposition that the future of education reform in Australia, and elsewhere, has to be tied to issues of community inequality which are the principal contributors to poor educational achievement. In other words, education is not the way out of poverty. Rather, a country’s education gains depend on reducing the country’s poverty and its impacts on families. Improving educational achievement needs ‘joined up’ solutions. It is for these reasons that the book includes an essay on economics which summarizes the main features of neoclassical economics and outlines alternative views from other areas of economic and related research. There are two essays on community and inequality which show just how desperate the situation is for many people, including children, in many countries including Australia, especially Aboriginal peoples. And because issues of creativity and the contribution by non-school educational institutions are important but seldom considered, there are essays on them. The essays address important issues within schools including, for instance, performance evaluation and careers, the nature of education in the classroom and informal education. The essays deal also with the education policies of other countries and give examples of successful teaching, in for instance Chicago and Pittsburgh. These essays, through this broad coverage, provide a guide to understanding the reforms in education which we should be seeking. Several books in the United States review the failure of reforms and outline practices which make a difference. Most books on education only concern education at school. That there is a very credible and very large body of high quality research on all aspects of education is a point made by the book. However, much of public policy in some countries ignores that or even denies its existence.
