Revising her 2000 Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Cambridge, Grig (classics, U. of Edinburgh) argues that the construction of early martyrs was largely performed after the Peace, by the Church Triumphant, rather than during the years of persecution, by the suffering Church. She continues that the making of these Christian heroes played a vital role in the construction of Christianization in the fourth and fifth centuries, which involved nothing less than the cultural transformation of the entire Roman world.
