The attempt to reconstruct Jewish/Yiddish culture in Eastern Europe after the Holocaust has long been undocumented in academic studies. The papers in this collection were delivered at a conference held in 2006 at Jagiellonian University in Krakow and edited by Grözinger (Jewish studies, University of Potsdam) and Ruta (Jewish Studies, Jagiellonian University) The subjects include Jewish-communist identity, the establishment of Yiddish theater, arts groups, newspapers and books. Yiddish writers Leyb Olitski and Alexander Lizan are also profiled. A feeling of sadness pervades many of the articles, both for the people lost and for the culture that may be preserved but can not be revived. Emigration and assimilation all over the world mean that there are few native Yiddish speakers left. This volume helps to ensure that their world won't be forgotten.
