Gruenwald describes Jewish Merkavah ("Divine Chariot") mysticism, its history, structure, and main thematic features. It developed from visions like those described in Isaiah 6 and Ezekiel 1, 8, and 10, he says, though when it appeared on the literary scene it did so in more complex ways than its prophetic fore-fathers. The tradition ended sometime in the Ge'onic period, 200-700 CE, but writings of Jewish medieval mysticism, the Kabbalah, refer to it, and the German Hasidim movement of the 12th and 13th centuries engaged in some forms and contributed to the preservation of the Hekhalot ("Divine Palaces") literature manuscripts, which give a full-scale presentation of Merkavah mysticism. The second edition fills some gaps left in the first, and updates the scholarship. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
