This bibliography focuses on the relationships of military organizations to other social institutions and to society in general. Hacker (curator of armed forces history, Smithsonian) pays particularly close attention to periodical literature. He begins with general topics such as comprehensive and cross-cultural studies, the history of ideas about war, state, and civilization, war explained culturally, politically, biologically and economically, and nonstate warfare. He then sorts references by time and place, with topics such as ancient warfare (including Egypt, Rome, China, and the classical world), western and eastern Eurasia, Africa and Oceania, and pre-Columbian and post-contact North and South America.
