As Hackett (communication, Simon Fraser U., Canada) and Carrol (sociology, U. of Victoria, Canada) detail in the beginning of their book, corporate media in the US and elsewhere is characterized by a democratic deficit both in terms of the ability of dominant groups to project power through the media and in terms of the ability of the media to project power over other social institutions and processes. Their main goal in this work is to describe and analyze the democratic media activism that seeks to counter this deficit. They place democratic media activism within the wider ideological context and provide historical and contemporary case studies of media reform organizations and projects.
