Although rap and hip-hop have been maligned, they are an integral part of many people's identity and a venue for positive expression. Hadley (music therapy, Slippery Rock U.) and Yancy (philosophy, Duquesne U.) bring together music therapists and social workers from English speaking countries to explore how listening to, discussing, performing, and creating rap and hip-hop can be used in music therapy. Part 1 offers historical and theoretical perspectives, looking at the hero's journey in hip-hop and a hip-hop feminist approach to music therapy. Chapters in part 2 describe programs and research on rap and hip-hop with at-risk youth in settings such as Canada's Arctic and First Nations communities, urban youth in shelters, and youth in a short-term juvenile detection facility. Part 3 focuses on rap with clients in specific clinical settings, such as grief therapy, medical settings, and substance abuse treatment.
