The role of ultra-Orthodox men is the subject of fierce debate in Israel because of their exemption from military service and lack of preparation for the secular job market. The highly insular Haredi men in yeshivas (Jewish secondary schools) counter that their Torah study is the only hope for the continuation of the Jewish people. Through participant observation, interviews with students, and readings of texts by Haredi rabbis and educators, Hakak (health sciences and social work, U. of Portsmouth UK) contributes much-needed data on the experience of contemporary yeshiva students, and the institution?s internal and external pressures for change from its traditional model of masculinity.
