With the proliferation of forms of communication comes an overload of information. Hammer (UCLA Center for the Study of Women) and Kellner (philosophy of education, UCLA) have collected essays on the study of the propagation of culture through media. They begin by defining the range of media/cultural studies. The second section deals with teaching the subject, with an emphasis on the essential skills of analyzing and evaluating the accuracy of information, something that should begin in kindergarten. This is followed by several articles on specific subjects from advertising to racial stereotypes to Barbie dolls and soap operas. The final section addresses aspects of many of the earlier topics, including education. The essays all address the many ways in which unfiltered information is appearing, such as YouTube, MySpace and Facebook, along with interactive games. The more traditional forms of media are also discussed. While intended largely for students in the field, the essays are accessible to general readers and would be of interest to parents and teachers. The lack of an index is the only drawback to this timely study. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
