This collaborative effort by four British scholars studies the social aspects of cloning through its interpretation in popular media, particularly science fiction--how films and documentaries have influenced people's attitudes and expectations. Haran (CESAen, Cardiff University) and her colleagues look first at the actual science of cloning, distinguishing between stem cell research for healing and for creation of a cloned human being, and explaining possible benefits. They continue with examples of the mystique surrounding scientists who clone, both in fiction and in reality, noting two recent cases of fraudulent claims to have produced cloned human fetuses. One chapter treats a neglected area of the debate, the bodies of women. The authors stress that they are all feminists, but this amplifies their study rather than slanting it. They are also some of the very few academics who have braved a science fiction convention for the sake of research. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
