This book was born in the author’s encounter with the bombardier of the Enola Gay, Tom Ferebee, in May of 1968. Citing the major historical implications of the trio’s narrative, he notes that they literally opened American strategic warfare in 1942 Europe by leading the first daylight bombing raids and literally closed it three years later with the dropping of “Little Boy” on Hiroshima. Preparatory to the invasion of North Africa, pilot Tibbets, navigator Van Kirk, and bombardier Ferebee were selected to fly generals in their B-17F, the Red Gremlin. Harder highlights the personal lives and relationship of the three men who helped end the Second World War. He corrects inaccuracies that have persisted in many books, magazine articles, and newspaper stories over the past 70 years, and tells the story of the near-catastrophic Nagasaki mission.
