Hardy (emerita, literature, Birkbeck College, U. of London) argues that awareness of his creativity was at the core of Dickens's self-awareness and therefore essential to the creation of his characters, subject matter, and narrative. She argues that Dickens's intelligence worked intuitively rather than systematically, and that his ideas about imagination often emerged informally in personal letters and implicitly through characters, language and story. His reflexive tendencies, she argues, were embedded in styles and forms of narrative and dialogue, and his self-analysis was essential to his images of normality and madness. Harty also traces Dickens's influence upon modernists James Joyce and Virginia Woolf as well as on traditionalists H. G. Wells and Evelyn Waugh.
