From 1915 to 1927, the Neighborhood Playhouse played a starring role in the Jewish tenements of the lower eastside of Manhattan. Harrington (humanities and social sciences, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York) traces the little-studied history of this this women-led, non-commercial theater's mission from the settlement movement-led betterment of immigrants through friction between social work and progressive artistic aims. Among its legacies for American community theatre are the Neighborhood School of Acting and the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Period photographs showcase the Grand Street Playhouse and its players. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
