Focusing on qualitative methods for dealing with human and organizational aspects, this book outlines methods for assessing project risks and benefits and strategies for risk management. Evidence is taken from a number of research studies, including a case study of a single group of companies over an eight-year period. The first part of the book explores practical problems of project appraisal and decision making, and discusses qualitative methods which can be used by both practitioners and academics for risk identification. The second section devotes a chapter to each of seven types of strategic projects and offers case examples showing risk management strategies for each type. Cases are illustrated with visual maps. The third part of the book examines the issue of controllability and explores how project risk appraisal can benefit project management. Basic knowledge of principles of project management is assumed. Harris teaches project management and heads the Department of Accounting and Finance at De Montfort University.
