The text is a detailed study of the battle of Brandywine, the largest battle of the American Revolution. The months long battle, in which George Washington fought, saw the fall of Philadelphia to the British but encouraged the new Americans to fight on. The text begins with an introduction and description of the key players in the drama. It also devotes a section to the mythology of the battle and its ever-changing narrative with each discovery of new historical evidence. The meat of the book is taken up with a detailed retelling of the campaign, beginning with General Sir William Howe’s journey from New York with 16,500 British troops down towards Philadelphia. The text contains maps of the battlefields and modern photographs of important structures and areas. There are also numerous appendices, discussing related issues, such as weaponry and the further careers of some of the characters. There is a discussion of the significance of the battle to the war and the country as a whole, and a complete list of the participating continental and crown forces.
