British Quaker and conscious objector Harrison (1920-2000) read a pamphlet during the early 1960s on the treatment of animals grown for food in factory farms. Her 1964 expose, published by Vincent Stuart Publishers, London, sparked a movement that led to extensive British laws and European Union regulations. She covers broiler chickens, poultry packing stations, battery birds, veal calves, other intensive units, the basis of quality quantity versus quality, and cruelty and legislation. This edition contains Rachel Carson's foreword to the original, as well as commentary by Marian Stamp Dawkins and other animal behavior and welfare specialists. The battery of black-and-white photographs also remains. Distributed in the US by Stylus Publishing. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
