Produced through collaboration between academic and tribal communities, this text considers how the Oneida Indians of Wisconsin were affected by the Dawes General Allotment Act (1887), the Burke Act (1906), and the Federal Competency Commission (created in 1917). Historical analysis is accompanied by 16 WPA narratives containing first hand accounts of the Oneida experience of land loss and other hardships under allotment. Editor Hauptman teaches history at the State U. of New York at New Paltz, and McLester is Tribal Secretary of the Oneida Nation of Indians of Wisconsin.
