As the Melian dialogue of Thucydides demonstrates, the ethics of international affairs has long been a concern of humankind, yet within the field of international relations, normative theorizing only really came of age in the past 50 years. In this work aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, Hayden (U. of St. Andrews, UK) presents 27 survey chapters assessing the current state-of-the-art in normative international relations. The papers include both literature surveys and original essays. They first discuss the most influential theoretical approaches in the field: realism, liberalism, cosmopolitanism, critical theory, Marxism, feminism, and poststructuralism. They then turn to the ethics of war and peace, human rights, environmental justice, and multinational corporations and global responsibilities. The final section is devoted to the ethics of global governance and includes discussion of the alternative globalization movement, issues of religious and cultural diversity, and conceptions of global citizenship.
